Herrick “Thunders” To 4th CRSA Win On The Mountain

Herrick “Thunders” To 4th CRSA Win On The Mountain

Race Report by Steven Ovens – September 15th, 2021 – DTD Jarrad Wakefield photo –

(CENTER LISLE, NY) – Dalton Herrick just has Thunder Mountain Speedway figured out. Herrick, entering Sunday’s Unruly Race day at the Karl Spoonhower promoted facility, had logged three career CRSA wins with them all coming at the Center Lisle speedplant.

Following Sunday’s dominating performance- make that four career wins.

Herrick rumbled from his fourth starting position to take over the runner up spot from Mike Van Pelt in the opening circuits. Point leader Jeff Trombley took the early lead from his pole starting position and was looking for his third win of the season.

The early portion of the race was slowed by caution flags and a scary red flag. The red flag involving Trevor Years and defending CRSA champion Darryl Ruggles. The two were running distinctly different lines at the time, but crossed paths with each other at the apex of Turns 3 and 4. The contact sent Ruggles barrel rolling 3 times, before coming to rest on all four tires. Ruggles would walk away but his night was done.

When the field got back to green flag action, Herrick immediately went to work on Trombley and made quick work of it. In full ‘send it’ mode, Herrick went a car length higher in Turn 4 than any other driver had gone all night and made the pass for the lead.

With the race still prior to the halfway mark, Herrick stormed away from Trombley and Van Pelt. Van Pelt had a career night in the 305 Sprints with his first career podium finish, with his wife and daughters turning wrenches in the pit area.

A yellow flag for a spinning Jordan Hutton and a broken steering for Dana Wagner gave Trombley two additional opportunities to take a swing at the lead. But Herrick found the top of Turns 1 and 2 to his liking and would gap Trombley and Van Pelt before they had an opportunity.

Trevor Years and Ronnie Greek completed the Top 5.

“We started the season so well, then had some trouble, so it feels really good to get the job done here,” said Herrick after hearing the roars of the crowd from his wing dance.

When asked about the thrilling move for the lead, Herrick was very matter of fact about the pass.

“I saw an opportunity and just went for it and it worked.”

The Powdertech Powdercoating Hard Charger Bonus went to Ray Preston who gained nine spots from 18th starting position to a finish of 9th.

Jordan Hutton, who was no doubt frustrated after going for a spin earlier in the race, weaved his way back through traffic to bring home a 10th place finish. This earned him the “Maguire Family of Dealerships Magnificent Move of the Race.”

The award drivers are appreciative of but don’t necessarily want to see at night’s end was awarded to new Rookie Timmy Lotz. A 19th place finish after registering a DNF saw Lotz receive the “Midstate Basement Authorities Out of the Basement” award.

Next on the schedule for the Super Gen Products / Champion Power Equipment CRSA Sprints will be the final of three stops scheduled for Fonda Speedway. The event paying $1,000-to-win is part of Fonda 200 Weekend at the Brett Deyo-promoted facility and will boast some big names on the CRSA Sprints and Modified side of the pit area.

The CRSA 305 Sprints are powered by Super Gen Products with their Champion Power Equipment located in Newark, NY.
