Herrick Is Heroic On “The Mountain” & Looks For Fourth In A Row

Press Release by Steven Ovens – July 3rd, 2022 – Jarrad Wakefield photo –

(SODUS, NY) – There are just some drivers that take a liking to certain tracks. When you go to Fonda, you know Jeff Trombley is going to be the one to beat. When you go to Land of Legends Raceway- Darryl Ruggles has the target on his back.

But when it comes to Thunder Mountain Speedway it has been McDonough, NY driver Dalton Herrick who has the hot hand. Coming into the July 4th Weekend special at Thunder, Herrick is on a streak of three CRSA Sprints wins in a row. Herrick took the checkered flag in 2018, 2019 and last Fall in September of 2021.

What has been the key to Herrick’s success at Thunder Mountain?

“I guess a lot of it honestly is that local track luck,” said Herrick earlier this weekend.

“I’ve been there since the place opened, be it in the stands or driving my sprint car.”

Maybe it was watching some of Thunder Mountain’s best wheel around the tricky three-eighths-mile over in Center Lisle, NY. Could it be something about the shape and configuration that just seems to suit Herrick’s style?

“Thunder Mountain has a lot of banking and it usually has a lot of bite. Put those too together and there is usually a bit of cushion to lean on, which gives me the opportunity to hammer down nonstop around that place.”

Herrick used that outside lane to sweep around Trombley to take the lead and eventually the win on September 12. When Herrick made the pass in Turn 4 there was just enough room for the wall, Trombley, Herrick and maybe a sheet of inkjet printer paper.

The driver of the Kiser Sand and Gravel, Old Iron Automotive, Kennedy’s Towing No. 29 has four career CRSA Sprints wins to his credit. All four of them have come at Thunder Mountain. How can he get his fourth in a row and fifth CRSA win overall on Sunday night?

“Our plan is to bring the same setup we use every year here and hope that either nobody else has caught on or caught up to us.”

With the way Herrick has started the 2022 season, Thunder Mountain could present a big opportunity to launch the 29 team into the Summer stretch of tour races. Herrick has yet to score a victory but is tied for the series lead in Top 5’s with three and hasn’t finished outside the Top 10 at any of the previous five races. He also trails point leader Jordan Hutton by only 20 points.

We asked Herrick what has been the key to their consistency to start 2022?

“A lot of luck is honestly the answer. We do put a lot of hours in during the week making sure everything is in top order. I also talk to a lot of people that are way smarter at this stuff than I am.”

Herrick may be humble but as the saying goes, “the numbers don’t lie.” Keep a close eye on the 29 car today at Thunder Mountain Speedway.

Fans not able to join at the track are encouraged to tune in on Dirt Track Digest’s live video stream by logging on to dirttrackdigest.tv for the low price of $26.99.

A driver’s meeting will take place at 5:30PM with Heat in Engines and Hot Laps rolling off at 5:55PM and 6:00PM. Race time is 6:30PM.
